I find this among the best of the many PHP books out there. I have a tendency to prefer books that will later serve as good references. Other books provide better step-by-step tutorials. Throughout the course I will be referencing sections in the Core PHP Programming book by Atkinson for those of you who want to explore each aspect of the language in more depth than the examples I give. That will be useful if you choose to take the PHP certification exam.

You will need a working background with HTML for this course. It is recommended that you have taken or are enrolled in CIS 148, Web Page Markup Language. If you have not done so, this is the recommended book for that course and will give you some of the basic knowledge needed for the web page portion of PHP.

The new edition of this book was just released in December 2009 and it tracks the contents of CIS 148 very closely. I may use this as the required book for CIS 148 in future semesters.

This is an alternate recommended book for CIS 148, Web Page Markup Language, and it explains the current philosophy and standards behind web design and development fairly well.
