This is the book to which I refer throughout the course, and I strongly recommend that you get this one or HTML, XHTML & CSS for yourself. You will likely refer back to these throughout all your web development courses.

This tutorial guide for HTML/XHTML and CSS was the primary book for this course until the most recent edition of the Meloni/Morrison book was released. It has a good set of reference pages in its appendix, and it still is a good alternate choice for this course. I've left all the references to this book in the course pages, along with references to the Meloni/Morrison book.

This is the alternate recommended book which explains the current philosophy and standards behind web design and development fairly well. It's not so much a guide to the nuts and bolts of HTML and CSS as it is a guide to good web development practices. If you are serious about this as part of a career, this is a good book about why we do things the way we do.
